On January 15, 2008, in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Barrister Akin Akinbote, President of Ohada Club, Nigeria, presented a paper on Nigerian arbitration. This paper, delivered at the Colloquium of the Association for the Promotion of Arbitration in Africa, explained the historical, legal and business context of commercial, construction-industry, and investment arbitration in Nigeria. He discussed the statutory authorization for arbitration in his country, analyzed impediments to enforcement of arbitral awards, and commented on progress toward judicial acceptance of this dispute-resolution method. Mr. Akinbote concluded that arbitration is an increasingly important tool. In closing, Mr. Akinbote, president of the Lagos Club OHADA, turned his attention to the OHADA Common Court of Justice and Arbitration. He suggested that an interface between the ECOWAS Court in Abuja and the CCJA in Abidjan would be another means of harmonizing practices in the region. At a conference to be held in Accra, Ghana, on February 28 of this year, he plans to elaborate on such an interface and on the efficiencies that it could offer, based on these courts' overlapping, albeit not identical, geographic jurisdictions.
